Helping People With Spinal Cord Injuries & Other Mobility Impairments Regain Their Independence ASAP
.........................................................................................................
Donna Marini has brought everything together - the people, the facilities and the financial resources - to provide answers to the biggest questions facing victims of spinal cord injury. "What happens to me when I go home from the hospital to begin living the rest of my life?" Who will take care of me? Can I ever hope to take care of myself?"
Here Are The Facts...
- Twelve thousand people every year in the United States suffer a spinal cord injury. Life changes in the blink of an eye, and the most routine tasks that we all take for granted like feeding, bathing and dressing ourselves become incredibly difficult or even impossible. The hope of living a full, independent life suddenly becomes out of reach.
- The healthcare system does not have an exit strategy that helps people with spinal cord injuries learn to live independently and care for themselves when they leave the hospital. For many people the next stop is a nursing home, where they will live the rest of their life with round-the-clock care. Sadly this group includes even teenagers. Others more fortunate will turn to their families for help. The ones that do often find that the situation at home becomes overwhelming, as families quickly discover that they are not equipped to deal with the stress that comes with providing 24-hour nursing care to a paraplegic or quadriplegic. This can lead to depression, broken marriages and broken families.
- Something can be done to address this situation - to help people with spinal cord injuries learn to care for themselves and achieve a better quality of life - and Donna Marini is doing it. Read more about Donna's plan and the Donna Marini Foundation .
